Inclusivity, Community & Fun!
Our space is a safe and inclusive space, free from discriminatory language or behaviour. We celebrate diversity, and believe everyone deserves to feel safe, seen and celebrated regardless of gender identity, sexuality, race, age, religion, body size or ability.
Gender diverse, queer, rainbow, LGBTQIA+ staff, events, guests and communities are equally valued and welcomed at Sweet Axe.
Staff Training & Awareness
We support our staff with training through Pride Pledge and provide pronoun name badges for staff to use if they wish.
Not every body moves the same, so we teach our staff some training methods that allow a diverse range of bodies to enjoy (and be successful at) throwing an axe. We love the satisfaction of working with a customer to find a throw that feels comfortable and safe for them!
Customer Support
It's our goal for all customers to feel safe & welcome at Sweet Axe, these are just some ways we're working toward this goal:
- Translations of our safety information in Mandarin & Te Reo are available in our venues, where language is a barrier, we work as hard as we can to bridge the gap- there's a lot that can be communicated through gestures!
- Customers have the option to include their pronouns in the game sheet so our hosts know how to address everyone with respect
Accessibility & Axe Throwing for People with Disabilities
We work each day to prove that anyone can throw an axe, and accessibility is an active consideration in our venues
- Different axes are available for people with different physical abilities, axes range in weight from 30grams through to 1.25kgs
- By the end of May 2023 all venues will have accessible bathrooms and entrances *we're installing a ramp at Brewtown Upper Hutt as we speak!
- Our axe-perts are trained in how to address different physical, emotional and mental needs within our space. We prefer to ask questions rather than making assumptions about how you move and what feels comfortable for you.
- We have a kit that includes different tools to assist- things like reflective tape and a flashlight, textured tape and noise devices to help those with visual impairments, moveable benches for people in wheelchairs, whiteboards to communicate with anyone with hearing impairments. Our fences are sturdy to grasp on to for people who have challenges with balance.
Ultimately, our greatest tools are our willingness to learn from our guests about what they need, you'll always be treated with respect and compassion in our venues.
Axes Don't Discriminate!
While the term "professional axe thrower" might conjure visions of a bearded lumberjack, it's our mission to dispel these stereotypes and continue to create more space for diversity in the axe throwing community. Axe throwing has no divisions for age, weight, gender- as you might see in other sports. There is no need for a Paralympic style division for axe throwing competitions. These are all irrelevant to a persons ability to master throwing an axe. Professional axe throwers are people of all walks of life, a spectrum of genders, outlooks and backgrounds.
If you have any suggestions on how we can improve- please email us at [email protected], we're always keen to learn!

Happy People
Took my team to Sweet Axe as part of a Christmas planning day - was well worth the time and money. Our axe-pert Monty was a righteous dude and gave us all great coaching and instruction, within a safe and controlled environment. Our group was of varied ability, yet everyone agreed it was a wicked afternoon. Would definitely recommend to anyone, absolutely worth a go! Chur! |
