We are committed to providing and maintaining a safe event experience for all our guests. Our processes & training are designed to ensure we deliver an extremely safe experience and with all reasonable controls put in place to remove or reduce risks to the health, safety, and welfare of participants.

We have a culture of safety, all staff are briefed, trained & take responsibility in maintaining a safe environment. It’s for this reason that we have an impeccable safety record. 

• We promote safety through staff training, community building and our rigorous risk management processes
• Sweet Axe has achieved a Silver Qualmark, through rigorous assessment of our safety & processes
• The axe throwing industry is proven safe and is endorsed by Wellington NZ, TourismNZ & Qualmark
• Worksafe NZ do not classify axe throwing as an extreme activity that puts guests at undue risk

Staff Training
All permanent staff are put through LCQ (Licence Controller Qualification) & First Aid certifications. Staff actively participate in daily safety checks of our equipment & the venue. We constantly capture & assess any potential incidents or near misses to ensure we are constantly evolving our safety protocols. We hold daily feedback chats with staff & a whole-company monthly H&S Meeting.

Processes
Guests are greeted warmly by our staff & taken to their lanes by an axe-pert. Here your axe-pert provides a safety orientation. We check for any prior injuries and use this information to tailor the technique and ensure guests are always comfortable. 

From there we start with training, our axe-perts are present in close proximity to guests, providing constant feedback on technique and procedure to mitigate any potential risks. ​

So what does that look like?

• Once briefed, two guests are invited into the lane, they stand 4 meters from the target and retrieve an axe out of it's rack. 
• Both guests stand in front of their respective targets (an apx distance of 2m from each other), facing away from the rest of the group. 
• The axe-pert stands apx 2m behind throwers, providing verbal instruction to bring the axe into position overhead. 
• At the same time, throwers start the throwing motion.
• Axe throwers wait until both axes have stopped moving before stepping across the safety line to retrieve their axes.
• Throwers have been briefed in how to safely remove their axe from the target, holding it with both hands and softly wriggling it up & down.
• Axes are returned to the racks, rather than being passed on to the next thrower.

Feedback & Supervision
Each guest is supervised at a ratio of 1 staff member for every 12 guests.  Lanes are contained with safety cages.

Only 2 throwers are permitted in the lanes at any time, always under the supervision of an axe-pert. Axe-perts are actively supervising, providing feedback, calling games & keeping score!

Risk Mitigation
We never take unnecessary risks, we have certain rules in place to keep guests safe:

• Dress code; close-toed shoes, hoods/scarves tucked in
• No drinks of any kind inside the lanes (these present a slip-risk)
  
• Intoxication; guests are not to drink prior to throwing axes
• We don't allow double bit axes in our venues
• The blade of an axe should always be facing away from the throwers
